The Sanborn Fire Company created 12,000 fire insurance maps of small towns and large cities throughout the U.S. The maps are a visual tool that describe the buildings and neighborhoods where our ancestors lived may lead to additional documents and can inspire family stories. Learn how to find, interpret, and cite Sanborn maps so you can develop accurate and nuanced stories about your family members from the late 19th to the early 20th century.
